However, since the end of the Cold War, there has been a resurgence in the UN's actual "powers" vis--vis International disputes resolution. It was the UN that facilitated Soviet troop withdrawal in Afghanistan, led to a peace agreement in Central America, led to political transition in Namibia, and undertook aid and peacekeeping efforts in many other places such as Gulf War Iraq, Somalia, Sudan, Rwanda, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq in recent times (Zacarias, 1999).

Goodman Brown must venture on a journey into the local forest, refuse the temptations of the devil, and return to the village before sunrise. The time era is approximately a generation after the time of the witch trials. Goodman Brown's struggle between good and evil is a struggle he does not think he can face. He reiterates his false confidence to himself repeatedly. Goodman knows what he must do but dreads the deed. Upon entering the forest he is suspicious of every rock and tree, thinking something evil will jump out at him. When he finally does meet someone on the trail, who appears to be of evil origin, he feels confident that he can refuse any temptations. This evil person makes several advances and Goodman refuses. This makes Goodman feel strong until they meet his childhood catechism teacher and see her turned. This act deters his confidence to a great degree. He continues down the trail looking for hope in the heavens but hears onl... ...community. Although these career driven people do not have a book to guide their path, they pursue it none the less. Some of these people have lost, or never had the belief, of reaching heaven, or even its existence. These people are the peers of the believers and set the rules or guidelines for career goals. So in effect the status in the community is a way of saying they are better. Analysis, Synthesis, and Evaluation of the Eagle Manufacturing Company

A. Ted Jones has been the supply manager for the Eagle Manufacturing Company for the past two years. B. Although Ted Jones has a great team of buyers, expediters, and support staff who carry out top notch work, the morale in Ted’s department is low. i. One of the senior buyer’s in Ted’s department, Bill Wilson, submitted his resignation. Bill accepted a position at another company where he will be paid substantially more although he will be doing the same work and will be under the same amount of stress. C. The previous month’s performance data for the office shows: 743 transactions, 98 percent with delivery on or before specified dates, 87 percent of supplies and material purchases at or within 5 percent of target price, 9 percent late deliveries, and a 5 percent rejection rate of materials and supplies received. D. A purchase request for a new robot, that according to estimates would cost $5. 5 million, was submitted by the maintenance department. It was supposed to be delivered and operational in seven months and only one source of supply was able to meet the delivery date. . An experienced buyer in Ted’s department, John McCauly, was negotiating with Fenwick Electronics for the robot. Although the maintenance department proposed $5. 5 million, Fenwick proposed $7. 2 million. Because of time, Fenwick was the sole source for obtaining the robot. b. John learned that the $5. 5 million estimate on the robot was in reality not an estimate but the amount budgeted for the machine last year. E. Several members from other departments of Eagle Manufacturing Company are not satisfied with Ted and the supply management department’s work. c. The Vice President of Operations, Tim Raines, and the Vice President of Marketing, Ron Hankins, were not happy that operations had run out of parts that week. Also the quality of the incoming parts was causing major production problems. d. The president’s secretary was not satisfied with the poor quality of the janitorial services contractor. e. The head of administration, Mary Jacobs was not satisfied with the quality of the new brand of paper which was constantly jamming the machine thus reducing productivity and increasing frustration amongst the administration epartment. II. Major Problem A. One major problem is communication between the various department and an understanding of the ins and out of each department and how each function of each department can affect another department in some way. B. Another problem is the quality of the services or products purchased by the supply management department. Because the quality of the services or products were low, the quali ty of work or product are also low which can affect profit and can also affect the way another department can accomplish tasks. III. Possible Solutions/Alternatives A. Communication would greatly help this situation. For example John, who is a buyer in Ted’s department did not know the $5. 5 million estimate on the new robot was actually the amount budgeted for the robot from the previous year. If John, the maintenance department, and even the finance department had been in frequent communication with each other regarding the new robot, John would have had a basis for developing a realistic negotiating objective with the supplier of the robot, Fenwick Electronics. There really is no disadvantage to good communication within each department. B. Each department needs to understand how the activities in their department can affect other departments, company profits etc. For example supply management, manufacturing, and operations are related. New product development begins with the manufacturing department. The manufacturing department submits a materials requisition to the supply management department. If the manufacturing department does not give the supply management department sufficient time to compare costs in order to purchase wisely, the company will most likely pay higher prices for materials. C. Eagle Manufacturing Company should hire a Director of Quality Assurance if they have not done so already. The Director of Quality Assurance would be involved in the development of new products to involvement in sourcing, supplier development, and qualifying the potential supplier. The Director of Quality Assurance’s objective would be to minimize quality problems throughout the supply chain thus minimizing problems other departments may experience. Although hiring somebody to handle quality assurance would be another expense to Eagle Manufacturing Company, hiring somebody to handle quality assurance would be like an investment. This person would ensure that the quality of a potential supplier is exceptional which would then create good quality work which would then increase profits for Eagle Manufacturing Company. IV. Choice and Rationale Eagle Manufacturing should first and most importantly focus on good communication within their departments and also make sure each department understands how all departments are interconnected and affect one another. Encouraging and maintaining open communication throughout the procurement process will 1) reduce the frustrations within each department and raise company morale and 2) possibly cut costs for supplies. V. Implementation/The Action Plan Ted Jones, the supply management manager for Eagle Manufacturing, must discuss the communication problem between departments to manager of each department immediately.

Usually with high school dropouts it is based on social background and academic behaviors. The organizational structure needs a positive teacher-student relationship where the students will be encouraged to want to learn and succeed. In this type of case with high school dropouts there may be a need to set up an informal organizational chart, which introduces flexibility into the structure. The kids that will be participating in these programs may be working at a job, and need to set time for education at night or vice versa. Having a flexible schedule can help provide time for all of the students to benefit from. This type of structure can be categorized under the heading of matrix organizations. This struc ture would have the need for more than one supervisor for the employees. Sometimes this type of chain of command can run into problems such as power and authority. However, the benefits may well outweigh the costs if better decisions are made, if they are more widely supported though out the organizations, and if they prevent the alienation that so often accompanies a rigid, bureaucratic structure. I will make full use of theoretical models and show how they can be useful to BA. British Airways is one of the worlds largest fleet airlines and the company runs routes covering almost every corner of the world. Traditionally the companys strategy has been run in accordance with the design school. This basically suggests that those at the top of the company are the ones who are making the decisions with little regard to the external environment in which they are in; they also have very little regard for what their customers actual needs are they simply believe that the customers needs are the product that they supply. One of the main and most influential critiques of this school of thinking is that the company does not know its own strengths and weaknesses so therefore can never truly be at its most competitive. In the beginning of the 1980s BA realised that they were experiencing difficulties with increased competition from other airlines. During the early 80s their profits were falling dramatically. This made them realise that they had to change their management style. They didnt make the transition to a new management style straight away but they did change their mission statement and put a lot of effort and innovation into implementing it. This is when the famous advertising slogan came into effect the worlds favourite airline. The new mission statement stated that BA wanted to be the undisputed leader in world travel and they wanted to set new industry standards using better technology to ensure better and more competitive prices for their customers. Although we are now in 2003 little has changed in the mission statement, the most significant addition is the pledge to try and be more eco-friendly. From the 1980s up to September 11th 2001 BA continued to enjoy growth both with their market share and in the stock market. They were offering full coverage of the world as well as a smaller low cost airline. After the events of September 11th in the same way that other major airlines suffered financial difficulties BA did as well. The main problem BA suffered was that they were to slow to react in order to deal with the problems and they only started to begin the recovery program a year after the tragic event. Recent strategic changes have included measures such as decreasing capacity on many routes in order to ensure that there are never any empty seats (i. e. potential profit is maximised). BA has also sold their low cost airline GO in order to concentrate on the main airline. BA is also trying to entice more business class travellers by implementing new seats in business and first class which turn into six foot beds. All these new changes have so far proved to be successful. BA claim that in the last quarter their passenger numbers have risen by 4. 5% and in the stock market their share price has started to rise again. In order to examine exactly how successful the BA strategy has been and will potentially continue to be it is essential to look at the company internally and externally. To look at BA externally the opportunity and threats that it faces needs to be examined first. Since September 11th there are many new threats as well as many of the old threats that used to haunt BA. Due to the fact that BA was still in the design school of management they did not realise these until recently. The fact that they have now realised them is a promising sign as it appears the management style of BA is changing to a more modern approach.

Iraq had never attacked any of its neighbors since the end of the Gulf War as it had become quite weak and could not afford any war (O’Neill, 2012). US suspected that Iraq and Saddam had close ties wit h the terrorist group Taliban and its leader Osama Bin Laden and the US even suspected that he might have contributed to the attacks of 9/11 (Zinn, 2002). Since 9/11 US has been at a war against terrorism and has been at war with Afghanistan and Al-Qaeda and its leader Osama Bin Laden, Al-Qaeda had openly accepted the responsibility of the 9/11 attacks and even threatened US to attack US and allied nations in future due to which US launched an attack at Afghanistan and stood victorious. But Saddam Hussein had never conducted such threatening activities and should not have been attacked on the basis of terrorism. Instead of wasting resources in Iraq and causing damage throughout the world US should have focused on its war against terrorism in Afghanistan where the real terrorists exist and who continue to not only disturb the US society, but societies all over the world. Attack on Iraq did not lead to decrease in attack conducted by terrorist groups; rather terrorist groups have beco me much stronger due to this war. Individuals living in Iraq and other countries have started raising their voices against US and there are even those who do not appreciate what US did to Iraq, due to this the terrorist groups have gained more men and more personnel to dismantle US as these terrorist groups use the hatred against US to cause destruction in US.
